.:: y'om say'n? word. ::.

a friend and former coworker wore this t-shirt on one casual friday, i recall it was orange, and the back of the shirt had the phrase "y'om say'n?" on it. i asked him, "what's that?" his response: "y'om say'n?" and from that day on, everytime he wore that shirt, he'd see me and say "y'om say'n?" and i'd respond with "word."

there is nothing that irks me more than when someone "acts" like they don't understand someone. my mom speaks little english. i mean, she gets by, but it's very broken and a challenge for her. but she tries very hard. ever since i was really little, i remember getting soooo angry when ppl act all irritated and frustrated at the fact that my mom's english isn't "perfect." they say things like "what did you say?" and "i can't understand you." but i'm sure if they took the effort to actually listen to her, it would have been crystal clear what she was saying. that anger got stirred up in me again, today at work. one of my coworkers has only been in the US for 3 years. he's married with two teen-age children, and is a well-educated, senior management-level korean. his english, tho not "perfect," is very good, and he has quite an extended vocabulary. but he has a heavy korean accent. today, i heard someone say in that same derogatory tone "i can't understand you." and i just kinda stopped what i was doing and had to take a minute not to go over there and scream at him for saying that. i don't even get this mad when someone calls me "oriental." that i just brush off and get over. this, for some reason, really really angers me. that people are so impatient and inconsiderate to not want to listen to someone who is trying very hard to grasp a whole new language very late in life. i'd like to see how well they speak korean after being thrown in korea for a few years. the only difference is that in korea, he would be encouraged and applauded for his efforts, not chastised for trying.

good lord, what is going on with these gas prices!!! i just paid $2.39 a gallon, and that's for generic valero gas. sheesh!

i have an awful addiction. there's a really great boba place, just a couple miles from my house. they have the yummiest drinks ever, real fresh ingredients (not powders like most chains), and they have these things called eggette waffles. apparently there are vendors along the sidewalks selling them in hong kong as snack foods. they're soooo good, and i find myself at eggettes way too often, spending at least $5.75 on a drink and waffle. yikes. it's worse than a coffee addiction. *sigh* i'm not so sure i want to give this one up tho. the workers there know me. the guy that makes my drinks knows i like the skinny straws (i never get the actual tapioca). that familiarity is great. makes me think of the guy at tully's that i used to see every friday when i worked in the city. he always hooked me up. see, it pays to know people! :)

if you're in the south bay and feel like eating some super fresh sushi, go check out sushi zone in campbell. for the month of august (they're grand opening), they're taking 20% off your entire meal!!! my parents know the owners, and they're just the nicest couple ever. the sushi is soooo fresh and yummy!! their rolls are HUGE! yum...i think i need to go back there soon...

i have a cold. i never get sick. couldn't be any worse timing. i'm swamped at work, so i can't even take a day off to recuperate. :( i'm all stuffed up! boo.

in other news, i bought the powerpuff girls relish rampage for ps2, and it's sooo cute! i'm horrible at games like that, so i figured this one would be easy, since it's probably geared toward little girls. yeah, i'm already stuck and frustrated. hmph.

there was a small fire at work yesterday. i was having lunch with a coworker, in our employee dining room, and the alarm sounded. we all just kinda looked around, and ppl started getting up. i was tempted to take my soup with me but refrained. when we got out of the building, you could see smoke coming from the porte cochere!! then the fire engines came wailing in...drama. it was just a tiny fire in one of our chimneys. uh, hello, ever heard of chimney sweeping?? apparently this has happened twice before.

okay, must scavenge for dinner now. don't have the funds to go grocery shopping til thursday. why does it feel like i'm always living paycheck to paycheck?

hrm...dsl has been down all weekend.

friday marked 4 years of j & w. i can't believe it's been 4 years. my old manager gave us tix to see jack johnson and ben harper, before he moved to vegas. so we celebrated at the greek theater watching a really great show! ben harper was sooooo amazing. carlos santana joined him for the last two songs. that's the 2nd time i've seen santana perform as a guest. the first was at the lauren hill concert years and years ago.

so with w having to move his stuff out of his dad's house, that means the nsx is back in my garage. i got to drive it up today. man, i love that car. everytime our money situation looks shaky, we talk about selling the nsx, but then we snap out of it and realize we can NEVER sell it! my favorite thing about driving that car is being able to hear the engine behind you when you accelerate. and not having to downshift when you need to pass a car. i mean you could, but you don't have to. ;)

okay, enough procrastinating, i have tons of laundry to do before heading down to my parent's house for dinner. we're going to their friend's new japanese restaurant in the south bay. yum....spicy tuna rolls...mmmm...

chicago was SOOOO good!! the music and dancing was amazing, typical of bob fosse. and kevin richardson, of backstreet boy fame, was a really good billy flynn, much better than expected. i think i'll buy the soundtrack. now i want to see the movie again. :) i kinda want to see the graduate too...but we'll see about that one. i have a major shift in financial priorities to think about. *sigh*

so friday's chronicle mentioned that american wedding was filmed at the ritz. when my department got ahold of that article, we all kinda panicked. no kidding. normally, we get about 10-12 web inquiries over the entire weekend for wedding info. this weekend, on sunday alone we had 20. my counterpart and i spent the entire morning answering all of them!! one inquiry even mentioned that she saw our hotel in the movie!!! yeah, we're all freaking out just a little...

p.s. i should mention that the actual wedding scene was NOT filmed at the hotel. that was a set built on a soundstage in LA. we do not have any large atrium looking venues in hmb. nope. just a lovely gazebo that you actually see several times in the film.

since february, my entire work has been anxiously awaiting to see american wedding. after watching weeks of previews on tv with glimpes of our hotel, it was really neat to see it finally! the movie itself was "eh," coming nowhere near the laughs the first 2 brought, but it was so neat to see our hotel! it's just sooo beautiful! and yes, it's even more breath-taking in person. :) there was an article about the film in friday's chronicle, so my entire department is holding onto our seats, anticipating a flood of calls to see the hotel up close and personal. good publicity i guess, not that we need it!
